NMS publishes Environmental and Sustainability Policy

NMS is today publishing a new Environmental & Sustainability Policy Statement which reflects its contribution and ambitions towards economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Commenting on the new Policy Statement, NMSI’s Head of Environmental Compliance, Dr Gordon Mudge said:

“We are very pleased to have taken the opportunity of updating our publicly disclosed policy to reflect the contribution NMSI makes towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and to re-state our ambition to further improve the contribution of NMSI’s business activities over time. This is an exciting step forward for the business as we work alongside our project partners and wider society towards a sustainable future.”

The statement draws on the framework of the United Nations Global Compact, to which NMSI is a participant, and the broad aims of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, to highlight the inherent contribution to social and economic prosperity of NMSI’s infrastructure projects, across the areas of health, agriculture, education and other areas.

At the same time, NMSI acknowledges the challenges faced by the construction industry to reduce and avoid the environmental impact of its activities and re-states its commitment to international best practice in this area, as represented by the IFC Performance Standards (2012).

NMSI can not deliver on its sustainability objectives alone, and the statement highlights the importance of NMSI’s valued partners in achieving improved sustainability outcomes. Through the relationships with its value chain and employees, NMSI’s commitment to the people involved in its activities is re-stated, guided by international principles.

The statement has been reviewed and ratified by the NMSI Board of Directors whose vision for NMSI sees sustainability performance as vital to the success of the company, as reiterated by NMSI’s Chairman, Frederik Hsu:

“NMSI’s projects have always been about enhancing wellbeing in the communities where they are delivered and we are proud of our contribution over the last ten years. In this crucial next decade for the planet, continuing this contribution can not be delivered without tangible action across all three pillars of sustainability – economy, society and environment. The policy statement we are publishing today represents an ambitious commitment to go further and faster in the years ahead to play a leadership role and drive sustainability performance across our sector.”

NMS operates in conformity with the following international standards, guidelines and principles:
